Dreaming Awake by Gwen Hayes

3.0

I have so many jumbled thoughts about this book that I seriously don’t know where to start. Well, maybe I should start from the part that made me the saddest; but before that, the good part.
Archibald Egnatius Varnie; that was Varnie’s full name. Man, did I laugh. Seriously, the guy had good reasons to go with Varnie.
But Varnie died. I kept on hoping that he was not really dead and that something would happen and we’d realize that he wasn’t really dead in the real world, that maybe he only died in Under and not in the other realm, which sounds terribly absurd thinking out loud, but hey, I really liked him and he died. All of my favorite characters have been dying lately. It seems unfair. Did he really have to die though? It felt unnecessary and as if the author was just trying to show a casualty in the war. Mike could have died. Why did Varnie have to die? *sighs*
At least his death was mourned till the end and unlike some authors his character was given due respect. I dislike an author when he/she kills a nice and likable character just to make us cry and then don’t even let the other characters mourn their death. They move on too quickly.
I pay my condolences to Ame and Haden specially. They lost a mentor, a great friend and a big support.
Anyhoo, I should move on with my review. When the book started I found it pretty predictable after being about 80 pages in. It didn’t stay that way after the second part started. Theia was acting totally like the YA female leads who think they can deal with everything on their own, and don’t trust the love of their life or their very close friends with what they’re going through because either they’re too strong to deal with it on their own or they don’t want others to feel their burden or well in some cases they don’t even realize they’re in trouble till it’s too late. I can actually blame Theia’s insecurities on the demon blood or well the not-knowing and everything that was happening in her life or her being ashamed of what she had become, but umm, I’m going to blame her a little for the annoyance she caused me then.
There were great conservations when all of them were together. A lot of people were dragged into the mess created by Haden’s arrival on Serendipity Falls. I won’t totally blame him because he was too adorable when he became totally human in the first book and the guy had some dreams too so I’ll cut him slack. Theia must really be very much in love with him for not blaming him at all. He blamed himself plenty but Theia mostly kept blaming herself. I mean, even Ame blamed herself for everything that happened. Pssssh.
I liked the Twilight reference when Donna found out she was pregnant. That was hilarious. Also, I loved when Theia said she felt like Buffy, the Vampire Slayer when she was all prepped up to fight Mara. The story line was good, the ending of Mara was quite ironic and somehow things ended up okay. I’m not sure if it’s the end of the series yet.
I’d rate this one 3.5/5.
