One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
4.5
dark tense

Talk about a page turner!! This book combined gothic elements with romance to create the perfect fantasy. I absolutely could not put this book down. From the very beginning of the book to the last line. (And yes, that line destroyed me too.) There were so many moments where I audibly gasped. I spent way too many hours staying up late with this book, and I would do it again!

There was something inherently unique about this book. All of the elements I typically crave in a romantasy were present, and yet it offered its own unusual twist. This book perfectly combined darker elements with haunting prose for an excellent read.

The “Nightmare” was one of my most favorite characters. He added so much intrigue to the story. I had my suspicions on his back story, which later proved right. Also, can I take a moment to say that my mind subconsciously fancasted him as Rumple from Once Upon a Time? A faceless character can only say “magic comes with a price” so many times before I have no choice but to picture Rumple. The Nightmare was also surprisingly funny? Yes, he may be this super powerful kind of dark character, but his sarcasm and wit made me laugh so many times.

Elspeth and Ravyn were of course very close second favorite characters. I adored both of them individually and together. Can we talk about the TENSION? The banter? Hello?!

I absolutely cannot wait to read book two. I just know the ending of this book is going to be permanently stamped in my brain until I get a chance to read Two Twisted Crowns, and I need it now.
