I really loved this, with all the Bookstagram hype around it, I was worried it wouldn’t live up, but it does!! I know the mystery is a huge part, but I honestly loved the romance aspects so much, I didn’t care. The mystery was a tad predictable, and it moved so fast at the end, in contrast to the pacing for the rest of the book. But those are my only two criticisms. The relationships!! Are where it’s at here! I loved Yadriel’s relationship with Maritza, in contrast to the rest of his family. Absolutely loved the development between Yadriel and Julian. Got a wonderful surprise in Julian’s relationships to his friends and brother.

And I thoroughly enjoyed the Own Voices aspect of this book. I can really feel the Latinx and LGBTQA aspects in a way that feels integral to the story, emotionally true and moving, teaches about the culture, and does it in a way that feels natural. I think that’s probably because many things were part of the author’s lived experience, one of the great things about reading an Own Voices story.
