The Sandman
by Lars Kepler
Late one night, Mikael is found wandering the snow just outside Stockholm. 13 years earlier, he went missing, presumed to be a victim of the serial killer Jurek Walter. He tells police his sister is also alive and being held captive by a man known as the Sandman. Now, it’s up to detective Joona Lina to hunt him down...
This book was gritty and chilling and I loved every second of it. The plot was fast-paced, and coupled with the short chapters, it made for a relatively quick read because I could not bring myself to put it down. What really made this book stand out, however, was the characters. They were extremely well-written, and Jurek Walter might just be the most chilling villain I’ve read.
This is the fourth book in the Joona Lina series, but reads well as a stand-alone. I have not read any others in the series, but I definitely will now!
