This was not a case of the book being better than the movie. I bought the whole trilogy years ago after enjoying the movie, and I never got around to reading them. I tried with this one, not long after I bought it, but there were too many characters to keep track of and I gave up. Listening to it now, finally, years later, I was not impressed. The writing was very "tell, not show"-y, there was so much unnecessary, overblown drama, and most of the characters were unpleasant. I don't know if I'll bother with the other two books.
