This novel is a powerful statement on how fragile our world actually is. Those things we take for granted can be lost if we are not in constant vigil over them.
I thought that Roe vs. Wade was “established precedent” as two of our newer Supreme Court Justices said in their Senate confirmation hearings, but we see how that turned out. Our freedoms are not secure. We must monitor and safeguard them all the time.
This novel is wonderfully depressing. It is hard to read because you can see how a world like that could come about. I remember seeing an interview with Margaret Atwood recalling reactions when the novel first came out. Some tended to say “Oh, that could never happen here.” Others asked “How long do we have?”
I feel like this is a novel that everyone should read at least a few times in their lives.
