The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
by Arthur Conan Doyle
Some are interesting, but I was surprised at how many of the mysteries are not good. "The Five Orange Pips" is just Holmes realizing that the KKK is murdering people in Britain. That's it. No one is caught, no justice is achieved, no one is saved. In "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb," the villains just escape and that's it.
"The Adventure of Copper Beaches" was interesting, especially for the subtle hint that Watson thinks Holmes and Violet Hunter, the governess who asks him for advice and then help, could perhaps have been more than client and consultant.
I also was surprised that many of the stories are not in chronological order. Several towards the end are when Watson and Holmes are flat mates, but the ones at the beginning are after Watson is already married and moved out to live with his wife. I wondered if there's so weird heteronormativity at the basis of that--ensuring that readers know that at least Watson is straight early on.
