sstryker 's review for:
Northanger Abbey
by Val McDermid
I enjoyed the way the author re-imagined and developed the characters. She maintained the integrity of what Austen established but updated them in a believable way. This was refreshing, even if the main character's gullibility was slightly annoying. This, however, stayed true to the essence of Austen's Catherine Morland.
I will say that for the books I've read in The Austen Project so far (this one along with Emma), I've had trouble with the endings. They have seemed abrupt but I suppose this probably has to do with the author having a predefined plot line to contend with. As awesome as these writers are, it's no easy task to rewrite a classic.
