Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
5.0

When they tried to make me read this in school back in the day I found it dull and tedious and parochial and slow. It's only after forcing myself to read it now that I've realized these are all elements Anne is at war with, armed with her imagination and an optimism that's never rose-coloured. Interesting that its maybe the only novel I can think of that critiques Maritime culture (albeit subtly), but without belittling its inhabitants.
