Alright.. this is a tough review to write.
I really wanted to love it.. The slowburn was great but the book lacks originality.
I knew it was going to be a Hunger Games kinda book, but I feel like if you make up a class system and trials they should at least make sense. Why the trails? It was never explained - they just had to do them. Also why were those people chosen? Also never explained. The magic system with everyone having powers was really the only original thought to it.

I'm not at all a fan of love triangles and I was constantly asking myself why Kitt was involved at all. That made no sense - also the resistance felt like a bunch of dumb ass people who have no idea how any of it works. It seems like their revolution ended before it even started. Who had this stupid idea to just show up and expect everything to change?

What I liked tho was the characters of Payden and Kai. It was a bit much talking about the ocean and wonderful, lush, aquamarine eyes for the hundreth time, but other than that they were likable. Lovetriangle felt unnecessary and enemies to lovers was none existant. Maybe in the next one or throughout the series..

I will read the second one because the hype is so big, but my expectations are low..
