The Ferryman
by Justin Cronin
It's been a few years since the last book of the Passage trilogy, which I loved, came out, but I don't think that the author worked on this novel for very long. I thought that this book had a decidedly dashed-off feel to it, especially the middle section, which had a lot of bad action. The dialogue and thoughts of the characters at times was laughably unconvincing and often simply clumsy or stereotypical. What does it mean, for example, that a pistol has an unnatural feel--overly metallic (??). Justin Cronin is a good writer but I get the feeling he wasn't trying very hard here. Also, it seemed that I had read the book before, and it was not completely original in concept. The epilogue was very predictable.
