The Celery Stalks at Midnight
by James Howe
Narrated by the Monroe family dog, this is a tale of what happens when you jump to conclusions and make false assumptions. The two dogs and ol' Chester the cat are out to find out where the family bunny rabbit, Bunnicula has disappeared to (escaped?), and whether the vegetables he drains of their "life juices" will rise up as a vampiric vegetable army to turn people into the undead, too.
This was a read aloud to my 5 and 7 year old. To be honest, I think it was a little lost on them. They didn't quite perceive that the pets were on a wild goose chase and were operating on false assumptions. They wanted more vegetable vampires. I should have started with Bunnicula, but this was in a little free library, so we took it home.
