The Lost Daughter
by Elena Ferrante
This is a short book, it’s all about Leda, a 47 year old, divorced, mother of two daughters, English professor. She rents a beach house near Naples when her grown daughters go to live with their father. Leda becomes obsessed with a Neapolitan family that are also staying at the beach, particularly a young mother and her daughter. Watching their interactions leads to a deep period of introspection as Leda comes to terms with what it meant to be a mother, what she gave up for her daughters, and what it feels now to be free of them again.
