Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup
3.0

This story was achingly sad and a fascinating read on many levels. First off, receiving the first hand account of the experience of slavery, including the daily rituals and the making of coffee without coffee. While this was an important story used to engage and motivate white abolitionists, it is hard to read the author's concessions to oppression and while I appreciate his compassion for the cultural context in which white southerners lived, it feels misplaced from this time and place.
