Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

5.0

This book is a beautiful little gem. The writing and characterization are perfect. I loved it and can't believe that I haven't read any Zora Neale Hurston before. The speech is all written in dialect and it takes a little while to get the hang of it, but once you do, it really helps you to hear the characters. It's skillfully done.

The story is sad and tragic — but there is also love and friendship. And I love love love the main character, Janie. She feels so real and I felt like I got to know her through the book.

If I have to come up with one criticism it is that the story sometimes moved too fast. It would have been nice to slow down and spend more time in Janie's life.

I look forward to reading my next book by this author.
