What an incredibly moving story. I kept telling myself, “Yes, this is basically a true story. No, it’s not made up.” because it’s hard to stomach what Romania had to endure behind the Iron Curtain. I’ll admit that I knew pretty much nothing about Romania before reading this. I’ll have to look more into its history, though. Ruta Sepetys has found herself a new fan. I found myself laughing and crying along with each character. I cared so deeply for them. The scenes during the uprising were particularly horrifying and heart-wrenching, and inspiring. Absolutely beautiful writing.
