Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

5.0

Re-reading this book as an adult really knocked into my head how the series was never a love story, never even an adventure. It’s a book about suffering, a book about war. It spoon feeds you propaganda, conspiracy, crime, and death. Reading it as a kid makes these ideas comprehensible and reading as an adult you understand the world she drew inspiration from.

I think from best to worst (worst still meaning 4 stars from me) is THG, MJ, then CF. The hunger games is easily the best structured. I know everyone complains about the pacing of book 3, but I feel like the start of catching fire is more boring to read. Things don’t pick up until the games, whereas Mockingjay is on every page a tragedy I can’t look away from. Another point for Mockingjay, is that I’m for the epilogue; Katniss and Peeta’s relationship, at its core, is the same it’s always been. They’re there to protect each other, from the world, from themselves.

Lastly, my most concrete rating system is this: I have PTSD and she writes so well what it feels like. Makes me feel less stupid.
