All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

3.75

This is a beautifully written, very well developed, thoughtful story about World War II, and it made me cry a bunch of times. I loved the characters and the intense humanity and how it did not shy away from how brutally people can treat each other when they believe they are justified, or they will be excused, or it is expected of them. I think I docked it that quarter of a star just because of the
rape scene
(honestly I think the author considered it carefully and decided it was necessary, and did his best to make it as un-gratuitous as possible, but I still hated it!!!).
