Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce
5.0
Iconic. And foundational to young reading me. Adult reading me was sort of surprised by the lack of depth to the plot - it moves so fast you hardly have time to develop an idea of the world. And also by how unpleasant I found the romance elements. It's a weird mix of progressive and problematic - frankly discussing menstruation and birth control but also George and Alanna meet when she is 10 and he is at least 17 and he comes onto her when she is less than 15 - did not remember it that way!
