If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

3.0

1. have no idea where richard got his homicidal abusive tendencies from. like i get it's because of the whole oliver getting his role and all but the escalation felt unnatural to me? like that first scene with richard and oliver pop off kings. idk what happened after lol that letter must've had some crazy curse. i also know that he felt that james and oliver should fuck each other instead of his girls but i really never got that vibe from him--he seemed like the sort who would have no issue saying that to their faces. and of course we would have "if we were queer" instead of villains but eh.
2. felt like shaking them for being stupid, or do i have too much faith in the police? or my friends?
3. perhaps i'm willfully blind but james/oliver was kinda... annoying rather than endearing. idk is it because i'm suffering from the residual frustration from these violent delights but i'm pretty sure the book would be 1/10th the length if they just kissed at the start
4. i think wren could've been utilised more.
5. if the culprit was supposed to be hidden i wish i was surprised. as it was it wasn't a surprise.
6. would've benefitted from delaying richard's death, and instead spend more time fleshing out the complexities of his character. i don't know, psychological exploration of a polycule's (for lack of better word) breakdown is fun but that was a lot, yo. i don't know if the reason why i like filippa is cuz of this. me watching the characters commit dumbassery because of self-imposed trauma: ah shit here we go again.

and i hate open endings, though i've an inkling what it was trying to hint at.

absolutely hilarious for what it is though. bunch of clowns. oh no, murder! enjoyable read no thanks to shakespearean talk for which i had to suspend disbelief and a migraine to push through. the girls and alexander my beloveds.
