by Jodi Picoult
Someone I know says Jodi Picoult writes like she has a chip on her shoulder. I thought it a pithy description of what I don't like about her books.
What I do like are the compelling plots, not like other books in the realm of women's fiction. But I don't like the sometimes 'preachy' attitude of the books - as if the reader has never encountered a situation before (in this case, a person with Asperger's Syndrome).
The characters in this book (except, Oliver and Rich) are well drawn. I hated the mother and the writing must be pretty good for me to have developed that much antipathy. And my heart went out to Theo, the forgotten child. I don't know if the portrait of Jacob was accurate - though many online seem to say no. I've met only one person with Asperger's and for me the description was spot on.
I'd recommend as a fairly light weekend read.
