Paris: The Memoir by Paris Hilton

5.0

so fucking gut-wrenching. just straight up crying at some points.

paris is an excellent writer, and i can't imagine how cathartic and painful writing this must have been. despite everything that's been said about her, this is an intensely vulnerable story about abuse, sexual assault, ptsd, and the way that her trauma from the troubled teen industry has led to reinventing herself as she's known today. her description of the dehumanisation and torture she endured were brutal, and they weren't even particularly detailed or gory; just the simple facts of memory that paris dredged up from some of the most horrible months of her life. it's no wonder that she dissociated herself from the memories of those barbaric conditions.

the way she speaks about her family and specifically her parents in the aftermath of provo is...so kind, full of understanding, forgiveness, and compassion beyond what most people would be able to muster up after an experience like that. to beg your parents to pick you up because the facilities are abusing you, for them to not believe you and continuously send you back, and then forgive them in the end because you understand that they too were victims of a complex industry that preys on desperate parents? in the way she speaks about the people around her and in the way she has found a way to reconnect with her family, paris is so truly one of most forgiving people i've ever read. i could never be as big of a person as she is to some of the people here. you can tell how much she really tries to see the best in everyone.

this book winded me, left me breathless with paris's compassion towards people who have cut her down and delighted in her dehumanising commodification. she is a a girlboss and a businesswoman and a creative, but first and foremost a regular woman deserving of human respect, which the tabloids seem to forget. this book is paris standing up to say things she should have said, or saying things we as a collective like to ignore, like the absolutely horrific way the media treated young women like britney spears and lindsay lohan in the aughts and still today. paris talks about her own pov in her name headlines and scandals with such grace and honesty, all while reminding us not to take shit from anyone.

"The people who hurt you don't get the last word. You get to tell the story of you, and your story has more power than you imagine."

anyway PARIS HILTON I LOVE YOU
