A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore

3.0

Definitely not his best--I think, with the exception of Bloodsucking Freaks, Moore doesn't do his best work in this San Francisco setting. There are a lot of clever and funny things in this book, but there are also a fair amount of not-clever stuff, especially all the "oh, ha-ha, the Chinese lady eats pets" jokes, which I disliked as much for their hackneyed lameness as for their racism. Also: I saw the big twist coming from about the halfway point of the book--why didn't any of the characters? Still, the ending was very sweet, and there's some nice stuff about death and dying here. But yeah, it's no Lamb or Fool.
