 September 2018: First read

April 2021: Well, I can't believe I didn't review one of my all-time favorite books the first time I read it, but maybe I was too busy screaming? I re-read this book and Crooked Kingdom in anticipation of the Netflix show, and although I'll never recapture that initial feeling of the twists and turns, it was still a wild ride. Since I wasn't so focused on the plot this time around, I was able to appreciate Bardugo's writing style a lot more, and really marveled at the way she wove each character's backstory through her chapters.

Seeing our ragtag crew get together and form this slow bond was just as magical as it was the first time. I also appreciated the diversity that Bardugo included in this book, especially when compared to Shadow and Bone, and how she advocated for more diversity in the Netflix show as a result of how she's grown as a writer and ally. This is one story that I recommend to almost every reader and I don't think that will change anytime soon!
