Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

5.0

I don't often read memoirs but this was a fantastic read. I particularly appreciated the author being transparent and forthcoming about her feelings through her grieving process. She didn't shy away from discussing the difficulties inherent to caring for someone through an illness and the feelings that can surface.

Bullet review:
- Emotional journey
- Raw and unfiltered
- Grief and loss
- Cultural belonging
- Language and food
- Mother-daughter bond

There was also a major focus on the theme of belonging. The author is Korean-American and explores how her cultural identity was challenged in several ways and how she found some grounding by bonding over Korean food with her mother. This was a very compelling read that I'm sure was cathartic and therapeutic for the author as well.
While it may go beyond the scope of this memoir, the author glossed over some mental health challenges she faced during her teenage years, but I would be interested to learn more to understand in what way that might have shaped her relationship with her mother.
TW: death of a parent, cancer, sickness, description of food...
