Not the Girls You're Looking for by Aminah Mae Safi

1.0

DNF at 38%. I don't usually rate things lowly specifically because I dislike characters or find them immoral, but Lulu is absolutely unbearable and I knew after 100 pages I would not be able to take 200 more of her. She and the other girls in this are absolutely written to be mean, but in a way where it's trying to be cool or w/e...I'm a simple woman, I see a piece of media where underage girls call each other "sluts" and brag about how "slutty" they are, and I simply get up and leave. Like I know the author is female but these girls read like they were written by some horny dude trying to portray teens ~realistically~. Too bad because TMHYRF is pretty great, I think the author just underdeveloped this one. Somehow it's also way over edited though. The prose is often way too mature (and efficient if that makes sense) for the characters and it makes the tone really wobbly. I got the 'over edited' criticism once and didn't understand it, but I totally see what that agent meant now.
