I enjoyed the first book and the introduction to Long Lily, Basie, and Kit, and was looking forward to continued time spent with them. But I was disappointed with this. Knowing it was a 1.5 instead of full sequel, I expected a short story that could stand on its own. Instead it felt like the unrefined beginnings of book two, but abruptly cut off on a random cliffhanger that can only be resolved with further parts. Then there were three separate tales about Kit and Basie in different scenarios or realities. This felt like a prematurely published collection of the author's work in progress on the sequel, plus random alternate realities that felt like the author writing fanfiction of their own book instead of focusing on the sequel and continuation of the true storyline they chose to embark on.
