this book was definitely a mixed bag for me. i loved the concept, and the plot: i enjoyed following victor and his family through so many difficult political situations; the spanish civil war, life as refugees in France, then moving to chili, then exile from chilin in Venezuela... the experience of fleeing political corruption was so interesting to read about and to see through the lens of these specific conflicts. however, i struggled with the writing itself - it was so fast paced, i felt like i was receiving character summaries in almost every paragraph. i wanted to know how they felt, and what they thought, not just the actions that took place in their lives. so i would recommend this to people who know little about these specific events, but i found it a little disappointing as i have heard such good things about Allende's writing.
