Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics by Dolly Parton

4.0

I have always admired Dolly Parton’s talent as an artist, her larger than life personality radiating from such a tiny glittering package, and her dedication to literacy advocacy through her Imagination Library. This was such a fun book to listen to because clips of songs are interspersed with Dolly’s anecdotes about her husband and family, professional relationships, what was going on in her life that influenced specific songs. It was also interesting to see Dolly’s spirituality shine through in her discussions of her “God Space” and the influence of her family, particularly her mama, grandaddy, and aunt in her spiritual formation.

This audiobook has a conversational/interview style, so I was curious how it compared to the physical book. Based on the images available online, I think this is one book where enjoying the audiobook narrated by the author would be paired perfectly with looking through the book while listening. The hardbound book contains gorgeous photos, lyrics, and Dolly’s memories.

At a little over 5 hours, this is a quick listen that I thoroughly enjoyed and it brought back so many childhood memories. Whether you are familiar with Dolly Parton’s songs or not, this is a fascinating look into the life of the country music icon.
