Reasons to Stay Alive
by Matt Haig
I’ve never been much for self help books because most of them felt like glossy lies. I never got that feeling from this book. I heard about Matt Haig on disability twitter and fell in love with one of his works of fiction.
I put off reading this because I knew it would be good, but I knew it would be heavy. He broached the subject of his own depression and anxiety that makes it feel like you’re reading your own journal of your darkest times. I’ve always seen my depression as something real, something I had to deal with, but reading this helped me also realize how much I am constantly overwhelmed by anxiety and how they combine themselves. It gave me the courage to write through it again.
I was able to share some pages with my husband to help him understand why it fluctuates and it helped us a lot. I am grateful for this book. Another one I am sad to return to the library.
