Chrysanthemum
by Kevin Henkes
I would love to see a book with a similar theme be written today.
Working in the school system, I had two separate occurrences where a student told me, "I hate my parents for giving me this name." A name is part of our identity, and we need to teach our children to embrace their unique identities.
Unfortunately, where this story misses the mark is where Chrysanthemum finds her own value. Furthermore, the teacher didn't support her while she was being bullied. Sadly realistic in some cases, but it's not a good lesson.
This could be a great story to build a lesson from, but I wouldn't just stop at the book.
