Shelter by Jung Yun

This was an interesting read. It is about a Korean family, written by a woman born in Korea, but raised in North Dakota. It had the same Gothic tinge that I've noticed in other books I've read by Korean and Japanese authors where they give you glimpses into the decay at the edges of the story before revealing that nothing is really what it seems behind the bright, orderly, successful facade. There's also a fearlessness about leaving things undone and unsaid that I find unsettling in other books, but was appropriate here.

About the book specifically--it's always hard to read about people who have missed out on their lives pursuing what they think will make someone else happy. That theme was handled in a unique and delicate way that will make you question the intent of selflessness.
