This is an odd book because when it comes to the two main reasons to like a book, I don't. And yet... brilliant maps, brilliant illustrations, brilliant poetry (and not just the songs, part of why it was slow for me is I actively analysed paragraphs for their sensory and aural qualities).
The plot is almost nonsensical. It's driven by the characters, who are all greedy. The dwarves all flow into each other, Bilbo's main difference is his greed (I don't really care what they look like except to say Tolkein based the dwarves on a real ethnic group which ugh). Gandalf is the best and what he has to offer is he's the smartest.
When I read LOTR, I felt like I didn't like fantasy. It's since become my top genre and with so much of my taste changing, I figured I'd try this. Turns out I just don't like Tolkein.
