I enjoyed reading from the perspective of Neelo and feel like this is a great, quick read when you’re in the mood for uncomplicated fantasy/romance. However, I do feel that the first two books of the series are the strongest. I’m disappointed by how repetitive they all feel. If it weren’t for the somewhat developing plot, each book would be the same as the last.
We have the fated relationship that only one of the two characters knows about,
and the pace as well as the plot just feels weak. It’s unfortunate because I feel that Neelo had the potential to be one of the most complex and interesting characters but I feel that their introvertedness was described in the same ways, over and over again. Their neurodivergence was exciting to see, however the way Mulford wrote about it made it seem like they’d skimmed a symptoms list and that was the extent of the research. Talhan gave Labrador retriever boyfriend energy but you get to know very little about him as an individual. It just all felt rather superficial to me. I could also do without the to mcs constantly comparing each other to the sun.
