Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence

4.0

This is kind of a weird series. I did not read the first book; the second one, King of Thorns, was a BookBub offer of a bargain kindle and audiobook set. I thought it was interesting enough that I bought book three. This worked fairly well because things that happened in book one are referred to enough that, while I was left with questions, I was not completely confused. I don't think you could start with book three, though.

Anyway, the main character, Jorg, is willing to do more or less anything to pretty much anyone to get where he wants to be. Surprisingly, he is actually likable, in a humorous, unexpected, deadly kind of way. His father was a real jerk and Jorg is at least an improvement on dad. Jorg's wife Miana, shows up in book 2 and she is a kick. The books are set in a post-apocalyptic world where nuclear war a thousand years ago left society rebuilding from ruins. They have made it to the middle ages technologically, with some magic thrown in. Why not?

I thought the 2/3 of the series I read were worth the time spent.
