Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean

2.0

At first, I was really intrigued by the premise. Then I like it even more when I realized how 'easy' it is to read and the fast pacing since I'm not quite fond of slow pacing. Conflicts and Izumi's struggles are also cool since it reflects many minority groups' problems. Plus it is rich of Japanese culture. In short, I loved it.

But then it turns out to be something entirely different from what the synopsis promises. I thought it would focus more on Izumi's struggles, self discovery, and growth. While we do get that part too, it doesn't feel like the main focus while plot drifted to romance.

Because of that, I stopped getting invested in the story (shortly after Izumi's arrival in Tokyo). Thus, I cannot really enjoy this novel to my heart's content. Also it might be just me but I feel like the romance development between Izumi and Akio was kinda rushed. Maybe I'm the one who cannot read between the lines or maybe I missed the subtle details on the way since I stopped getting invested in the story, but when I realized they were already into each other but I had no idea when did things turn this way or how did it happened. So it was a real ???? moment for me they got together.

For now it is 2 out of 5 stars, but I might need to reread it since my mind was pretty much distracted by my own expectations.
