Honestly, the majority of the book was just torture porn for shock value. It felt grossly exploitative. The plot was predictable the whole way through. I listened to the audiobook, and hated the characters so much I was just screaming “shut up” over the narrator towards the end.
Claire’s “uwu my husband murdered my sister in a snuff film and also hundreds of other women and I literally saw the videos of it but I still have feelings for him” waffling and “women are being tortured and murdered but the real tragedy is that I WAS LIED TO while I lived in luxury this needs to be about me” attitude was beyond annoying. Lydia’s characterization was basically just “disrespectful caricature of a fat woman” from the very second she was introduced. Neither character was ever given any depth.
