We Could Be Heroes by Philip Ellis
4.0
adventurous funny hopeful lighthearted medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I was really enjoying this for like first 2/3s. Like REALLY into it. The characters seemed strong, well-rounded, and then we got to the final dramatic flare-up, and the way Patrick and Will “fall-apart” before they can Rom-Com-ily get back together was out of left field, and pretty out of character for them. It made me not believe it, because the issue that causes it was not well planted in the story, so it doesn’t really make sense in the moment. Just made them look like jerks, especially when Will then blows up on his best friend Jordan soon after in a way that did not sit well with me.

This made my experience of the rest of the book a tad underwhelming, so for Will’s last line of dialogue to be “I need a drink” was just very off-putting. Most of the story was great, and the ending was alright too, so I’ll only demote down one star, but honestly the book did not leave me feeling happy-go-lucky as Ellis claimed to be the point of rom-coms in his acknowledgment section. I’m sure this will go over well for many, but my end-of-book feelings are more along the lines of underwhelmed and disappointed.
