The Hound of Death by Agatha Christie
3.0

Much better short story collection than 'The Mysterious Mr. Quin' although the latter had a truly arresting and magical intrigue to it that, while not fully successful, was enough to keep one reading, I must say. However, 'Hound''s stories are better overall, even though there are some duds still, such as 'The Gypsy' and 'The Lamp'.

The writing in this book is also much better than that other - I actually think it's some of the best writing I've read by Christie. This also extends to the stories' solutions, some of which are masterful and satisfyingly poetic. I know that 'Witness for the Persecution' is considered the best, and I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately my successive reading of Christie's books completely ruined that story's twists and appeal! I could see them coming a mile away...

Anyway, other than 'Witness' (which /is/ nonetheless pretty good) my favourites were 'The Fourth Man' and 'The Mystery of the Blue Jar'.
