Front Desk

4.25 stars
This middle grade novel has been lingering on my TBR for quite a while. After really enjoying this author's NEW FROM HERE just a bit ago, I decided to pick this one up.
Mia Tang is a 10 year old immigrant, and her parents were hired to manage a motel from evil Mr. Yao. Mia ends up running the front desk when she isn't at school or sleeping. Her business acumen at 10 years old is amazing (unbelievable to be calculating monthly revenue at this age?). She desperately wants to be a writer despite struggling with English grammar. When she sees a contest she wants to enter, she's determined to practice her writing skills by crafting all sorts of letters. As a poor immigrant, she faces bullying at school. Her renters/friends at the motel experience discrimination and injustices as well.
It's hard not to root for Mia. Her maturity, business sense, take-no-crap attitude will serve her well, but she was a little *too* perfect, especially given her age.
