Oh my god this book was so unbearable. Beside the plot being incredibly boring, Dreiser’s prose inexplicably switched between incredibly dull to nearly unreadably complicated with no fluency at all. Through the study of Carrie’s character every other character was an unbearable stereotype that were essentially static in their personality (Hurstwood was somewhat of an exception but it was still just badly written). The last 50 pages were an improvement with a pretty good look at poverty but that was about all that I liked, it wasn’t nearly enough to save its rating.
Overall if you want to read a book with a plot that could’ve been 170 pages stretched out by writing that will make you want to tear your eyes out, this is for you!!!
