I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Changed the World by Malala Yousafzai

5.0

Let's be honest, I started reading the original version of this book about 2 years ago. I couldn't slog through the first 2 chapters about Pakistani wars and government so I put it down.

When this "young reader" edition came up on my daughter's book order, I thought I'd give it another try. I'm glad I did. This edition of the book was much easier to read. I've heard that it cuts out a lot of the violence and deep political details, and maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much.

I rarely give books 5-star ratings, and maybe this was closer to a 4.5, but it really impressed me that this young girl was able to stand up for and fight for her rights for education. She described it as being a part of her that she couldn't run from. She knew without a doubt that this was why God placed her on the earth and she would continue speaking up amidst threats to her life and her family's safety. Lots of times I felt myself wondering, "Why doesn't she hide?" or "Why didn't she run away?"

So I guess that's why I gave this book 5 stars. It shows the incredible things we can accomplish when we refuse to let fear rule our lives. Even when she was recovering from her gunshot wounds, never once did she regret what she did. This book made me realize that we are capable of so much more than we think we are when we put our trust in God and move forward with faith.
