I have owned this book for quite some time, purchased on a whim because it’s by one of my favourite authors; Phil Rickman. I finally decided to read it; I enjoyed it but did find it a bit of an effort to get through at times, hence the three and a half stars. The story is set in England in 1560, when 26yo Elizabeth Tudor is Queen (Queen Elizabeth 1). The book is written from the POV of Dr John Dee, the courts astronomer and advisor, and has been set the task to recover King Arthur’s bones and present to Queen Elizabeth. Some people and events that take place in the story are part of recorded history and have been mentioned in biographies and diaries. For me, sometimes the story flowed well and I wanted to keep reading to know what happened next and at other ones I almost felt like I was reading a text book. I probably wouldn’t read this book again but I will still read book 2; The Heresy of Dr Dee.
