This book was such a surprise for meeee!!

After seeing how hyped this was on Booktok and Booksta and the way women SWOONED over Kingfisher I was expecting a very light-hearted romantasy, heavy on the romance and kind of garnished with a fantasy setting. BOY was I wrong!

This world was so much more in depth and immersive than I had expected. The way that we follow Saeris’ journey, from her poverty-stricken origin in the baking heat of the third district, to her transportation to the Fae realms and path of self-discovery was just delicious.

Another thing I wasn’t expecting was the depth of side characters. There is a big theme of found family in this book which was so heartwarming and gave the action much higher stakes.

Speaking of action, this had me GRIPPED. I was intending on reading this with the physical book but it was so unputdownable that I had to buy the audio too so I could carry on at work. The plot of this story absolutely rocked me, likely because I was expecting a fluff fantasy as just a vehicle for a romance with a shadow daddy. The places we travel to, the foes we meet, the battles we fight - ugh! I felt like I had been in the trenches by the time I’d finished - but in the best way.

Nowwwww we’ve got to talk about him. Kingfisher is as dreamy as they say he is. For the first 50 ish % of this book I was firmly anti-Fisher and didn’t see how I was going to come round to his particular brand of broody, silent, I’m-doing-this-for-your-own-good-but-won’t-just-explain-that-ness, but once the secrets start unravelling I too would spend my night at a festival just staring at him and giggling like the girls in Ballard.

I’m gagging for book two and off to immediately pre-order.
