I had a great time with this one. African-inspired fantasy with an interesting world full of great characters. In a nation where the histories are told, sanitized and mythologized...and the truths of ancient magic are being erased, they find out that some truths will always come back to the surface.

There's a lot to love about this book too. The characters are great, loveable and tragic. There's a lot of morally grey, questionable actions happening, political intrigue, and magic-fueled action. It's gruesome in parts, but not always, like saving things to make the harshest parts feel devastating.

I truly love finding new fantasy series to delve into, and I'll definitely be reading the rest of the series from here. I'm locked in.
