Exhalation is a brilliant, thought-provoking collection of sci-fi stories about humanity's interaction and evolution with various forms of technology, be it the written word or a window into the multiverse, as well as the exploration of humanity's place within the universe from both a historical and futuristic perspective. Ted Chiang is clearly a visionary thinker with a strong physics background, and is able to present complex scientific concepts in an understandable and engaging way that ultimately addresses the human impact on individuals as well as a reimagined society as a whole. 

 

Although I definitely had favourites among the stories—“The Merchant and the Alchemist Gate”, “The Life Cycle of Software Objects”, “The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling”, “Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom”—I enjoyed every single one and will definitely be reading Chiang's other collection, Stories of Your Life and Others, sooner rather than later.
