Emily's Quest by L.M. Montgomery
2.0
Do you want to be depressed?
I think at this point L.M Montgomery had no happiness in her at all. Emily spends the majority of this book clinically depressed as her friends die or abandon her or betray her in ways that she just accepts. She finally gives in and agrees to marry the disgusting and emotionally abusive old man who has been grooming her since she was a child. When she thankfully escapes this fate she feels like she has wronged him. No one is happy, even those who theoretically have what they want in life. At the end, an ending that seems happy is tacked on but rings false because happiness is impossible in New Moon.
