Dune by Frank Herbert

4.0

Dune is pitched to have put Sci-Fi on the map. It was to Sci-Fi as LotR was to fantasy, and I have to agree.

What is it about? Young Paul Atreides is taken to the desert planet Arrakis where is father, Duke Leto, is tasked to rule the inhospitable world. When his family is betrayed, Paul flees with his mother into the desert sand which catapults him on a journey toward revenge and evolution. He grows into Muad'Dib, a mysterious man with a destiny greater than Paul could ever imagine.

What I thought? There is so much political intrigue and religion and ecology woven into its pages. I loved it and I loved the audiobook with each character given a unique voice. It helped me submerge deeply into the plot. Playing the Dune computer game in my childhood and watching the movie, I felt right at home in its pages. I do feel that it was a bit long, with some lesser plots drawn out more than others that needed more attention. I also felt the conclusion wrapped up too quickly as it spanned only a couple of pages. Apart from the pacing, this book was as phenomenal as many people say it is.

In short: Fantastic Sci-Fi full of so many intricacies, but the pacing was off in some areas.
