“But grief isn’t a competition. It’s not an identical pain that we all meet one day when death finds us. It’s a monster, personalized by our love and memories to devour us just so. Grief is suffering, tailored.”

“Wishes are the dangerous mind games we play with ourselves. The only way to win is not to play.”

“When white people say something's 'not about race,' it's usually because it is and they don't wanna talk about it.”

I'm really impressed that this series is a debut for Tracy Deonn. It's such a strong story for the first series she's published. The second installment in Legendborn was fast-paced and fun. I really enjoyed exploring the world even more. I feel like Deonn did a really nice job of showing readers more about the world without being too info-dumpy. I found the sections about root magic even more intriguing than the Legendborn magic system. It made it feel like Deonn could write infinitely within this world, even after Bree's story has reached it's conclusion.

My only major complaint about this book is that the plot seemed a little disjointed. Since this is presumably the second book in a trilogy, the first half of the book seemed to be wrapping up the cliffhangers at the end of the first book while the second half seemed to be setting up for a third book. While the story was still engaging and fun, it wasn't as cohesive as I would have liked.

Overall, this series deserves all the hype it gets. It's fantastic and I can't wait for Book 3.
