The Odd Woman and the City by Vivian Gornick
4.0
I really enjoyed reading this collection of ultra-short essays (from a paragraph to a few pages) by and about the author and her relationship with New York City and her friends. Her writing captures extremely well a certain class of older woman of letters, living in (it seems) Midtown Manhattan, and her thoughts and attitudes. It also captures well some of her, shall we say imperfections, such as her liberal-but-condescending views on race, based on a lifetime of comfort with white supremacy.
